21 Golds in Late Rush: India Finish Asian Games with 85 Medals

5

India’s Asian Games campaign ended on a high as the men’s hockey team defeated Malaysia 5-1 in the final on Saturday, October 3, securing India’s 21st gold medal and 85th medal overall.

The result ensured another top-five finish for India at the quadrennial multi-sport event. India’s medal haul was 21 fewer than its record tally at the 2022 Hangzhou Games, where it won 106 medals and crossed the 100-medal mark for the first time. The gold count also fell by seven from Hangzhou, when India claimed 28 gold medals.

The Aichi-Nagoya campaign was a mixed one for India, with several strong performances accompanied by a number of unexpected setbacks. However, a remarkable late surge transformed the complexion of the Games and helped India finish strongly.

As recently as Thursday, India were outside the top 10 of the medal table with just 10 gold medals. The final two days, however, brought a stunning turnaround. Gold medals in hockey and cricket were complemented by impressive performances in archery, boxing and wrestling.

India added 11 gold medals in the closing stretch, lifting its total to 21 and pushing the country back into the top five. The late rush provided a much-needed boost to an otherwise inconsistent campaign and ensured India signed off from Aichi-Nagoya on a golden note.
