Stokes Shrugs Off Bumrah Threat Ahead of 1st Test: “One Bowler Won’t Win a Series”
England Test captain Ben Stokes has dismissed the notion that India’s pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah alone can determine the outcome of the upcoming Test series, stating that England have no fear heading into the opening match at Headingley.
Speaking to the media ahead of the first Test, Stokes acknowledged Bumrah’s status as a world-class bowler but insisted that individual brilliance alone would not define the series.
“No fear,” Stokes said firmly. “In international cricket, you come up against quality opposition all the time. We know his class and what he brings to any team he plays for, but in terms of fear, definitely not.”
Stokes emphasized the collective nature of the sport, saying:
“I don’t think one bowler alone is going to win the series for either team. All 11 players have to contribute. There’s no single key-holder on either side.”
Bumrah’s Edge Over England — and Stokes
Despite Stokes’ confidence, Jasprit Bumrah has a formidable record against England. In 14 Tests against them, the right-arm pacer has taken 60 wickets at a superb average of 22.16. In English conditions alone, he has picked up 37 wickets in 9 matches, averaging 26.27.
Bumrah also holds an impressive track record against Stokes himself. The Indian quick has repeatedly troubled the England skipper with his precision and angle from around the wicket — a contest that could be key once again.
When England last toured India in 2024, Bumrah’s relentless spells proved decisive, frequently outsmarting Stokes and leading India’s bowling charge.
England Announce Playing XI Early
In a rare move, England have revealed their playing XI two days ahead of the Test. Ollie Pope returns to the No. 3 slot, edging out youngster Jacob Bethell, while Jamie Smith takes over wicketkeeping duties. The side features three frontline seamers and one specialist spinner.
England XI for 1st Test vs India:
Zak Crawley, Ben Duckett, Ollie Pope, Joe Root, Harry Brook, Ben Stokes (C), Jamie Smith (WK), Chris Woakes, Brydon Carse, Josh Tongue, Shoaib Bashir.
The first Test of the five-match series begins on June 21 at Headingley.
