Priya Sachdev Kapur Reflects on Painful First Marriage: “I Wasn’t Valued, But I Walked Away Strong”
In a deeply personal and now-viral interview, entrepreneur Priya Sachdev Kapur has opened up about her emotionally challenging first marriage to American hotelier Vikram Chatwal. The candid conversation with Kin and Kindness on YouTube has resurfaced following the sudden passing of her husband Sunjay Kapur on June 12 in London at the age of 53.
Sunjay, a businessman and former husband of Bollywood actor Karisma Kapoor, reportedly suffered a fatal heart attack after accidentally swallowing a bee during a polo match.
In the interview, Priya reflected on the early days of her first marriage, admitting she believed she had found her ideal life partner. “He ticked all the boxes—Wharton graduate, Morgan Stanley career. I had done mathematics at UCLA, and a double major with LSE. I thought it was a perfect match,” she said. But, she added, “Just like career paths, relationships don’t always go as planned… I thought I had it all figured out, but I chose wrong.”
She described sensing that something was amiss soon after becoming pregnant. “Around 15 to 20 weeks into my pregnancy, I began to realise this marriage wasn’t right. Still, I tried to make it work,” she shared. Ultimately, after five years of trying, she made the difficult decision to leave the marriage for the sake of her daughter and her own mental well-being.
Priya recounted how, in the aftermath of the separation, even her former in-laws reached out to express remorse. “They called to apologise. I wasn’t valued or appreciated for the sacrifices I made… that was my personal victory,” she said.
She also revealed enduring a difficult custody battle, which she ultimately won. “The divorce wasn’t easy, but I came out stronger,” Priya stated.
Reflecting on her journey toward healing, she said, “The voices in my head didn’t bother me anymore. When I took charge of my thoughts, I saw life in a new light.”
