No Link Between Covid Vaccines and Sudden Cardiac Deaths, Says Health Ministry.
The Union Health Ministry on Tuesday categorically stated that there is no evidence linking COVID-19 vaccination to sudden premature deaths among adults. The clarification comes in the wake of rising public concern and recent political comments, including those made by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah.
Citing findings from comprehensive studies conducted by the Indian Council of Medical Research (ICMR) and the National Centre for Disease Control (NCDC), the ministry said, “These studies have conclusively established that there is no direct link between COVID-19 vaccination and sudden deaths reported in the country.”
Key Findings: Vaccines Safe, Other Factors at Play
The government reiterated that COVID-19 vaccines administered in India are both safe and effective, with serious adverse effects being extremely rare. According to the studies, sudden cardiac deaths are more likely linked to a mix of factors such as pre-existing health conditions, genetic predisposition, lifestyle habits, and in some cases, complications following a COVID-19 infection.
“Sudden cardiac deaths can result from a wide range of causes, including genetics, lifestyle, pre-existing conditions, and post-COVID complications,” the statement noted.
Experts Reject Vaccine Death Claims
Health experts have firmly rejected claims suggesting a connection between COVID-19 vaccines and sudden unexplained deaths. They warned that such speculation—without scientific backing—risks spreading misinformation and could erode public trust in life-saving vaccines.
“Assertions linking vaccines to sudden deaths are not supported by scientific consensus,” said experts involved in the studies. “Disseminating such unverified claims can fuel vaccine hesitancy and adversely affect public health efforts.”
Response to Political Allegations
The ministry’s clarification came after Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah recently questioned whether the “hasty approval and distribution” of COVID vaccines could be behind the recent spate of heart attack-related deaths in Hassan district.
While refraining from commenting directly on the political remarks, the Health Ministry emphasized that India’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign has been guided by scientific rigor and regulatory oversight. “Vaccines have played a vital role in preventing severe illness and saving millions of lives during the pandemic,” the statement added.
Maintaining Confidence in Vaccination
The government urged the public to rely on credible scientific information and consult healthcare professionals before drawing conclusions from anecdotal reports. “It is important to prevent misinformation from undermining confidence in vaccination, which remains one of our strongest tools in safeguarding public health,” the ministry said.
