Amaal Mallik on Anu Malik Allegations: ‘I Don’t Consider Him Family; There Must Be Some Truth To It.’

Music composer Amaal Mallik has opened up about his estranged relationship with his uncle Anu Malik, particularly in the wake of the sexual harassment allegations made against the veteran music director during India’s MeToo movement.

In a candid interview with Siddharth Kannan, Amaal said he consciously chose not to defend Anu Malik when multiple women accused him of misconduct, because he never shared a personal bond with him.

“I didn’t talk or support Anu Malik when he was accused during the MeToo movement,” Amaal said. “It was not my concern because I don’t consider him my family. I was very embarrassed when he was accused of these things. We never had a relationship.”

Reflecting on the seriousness of the allegations, he added: “If so many people raised their voice against him, I believe there must be some truth to it. Why would people come and say it otherwise? There is no smoke without fire. Five people can’t talk against the same person.”

Anu Malik faced multiple accusations of sexual harassment at the height of the MeToo movement in 2018, which eventually led to his temporary removal from the jury panel of a popular singing reality show.

Amaal, known for his work with several leading female artists, also revealed a personal conversation with his father during the height of the controversy. “Once my dad asked me if I too will be dragged in this movement. I said, there is no chance. I can never be the person who will ask for physical favours in return for songs. All the girls who’ve worked with me have felt safe,” he stated.

Addressing his current stance toward Anu Malik, Amaal clarified that while he remains courteous in public interactions, there’s no real connection between them.

“I am respectful towards him when I see him in public. But after knowing his wrongdoings, I am not on good terms with him. I don’t have any relationship with his family. I haven’t met them in years. I don’t attend parties. They were invited for Armaan’s wedding. They had come too. It is more like professional rivalry.”

Recently, Amaal also stirred conversations online after stating that he had emotionally distanced himself from his extended family, further underlining the rift.
