Australia Offers Support as India Eyes 2036 Olympic Bid.
As India ramps up its efforts to host the 2036 Olympic Games, Australia has signaled readiness to share its expertise and partner with New Delhi in preparing for the global event.
In an interaction with Sports Today, Australia’s High Commissioner Philip Green said the two nations could build a “genuine partnership” in sports, stressing the need to go beyond cricket. “Australia will be hosting the Olympics in 2032, and India has its hand up for the Olympics, Commonwealth Games, and Asian Games. We believe there’s a really good partnership to be built here,” Green noted.
Experience on the Global Stage
Australia has extensive experience in hosting mega sporting events, including the Olympics in Melbourne (1956) and Sydney (2000), as well as multiple editions of the Commonwealth Games. Green said this track record, along with expertise in areas such as infrastructure, security, marketing and ticketing, could benefit India as it develops its case for the Olympics.
Symbol of Collaboration
Green also highlighted Australia’s contribution to India’s growing sports infrastructure, pointing to the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad—the world’s largest cricket arena—designed by an Australian firm. “Why not the Olympics? This shows how our partnership can grow further,” he said.
A Budding Partnership
With India openly expressing its intention to bid for the 2036 Olympics, Australia’s support signals the potential for a broader sporting collaboration between the two countries—two cricketing giants now aiming to expand their influence on the global Olympic stage.
