Trump Taps Political Aide Sergio Gor as US Ambassador to India.

President Donald Trump on Friday nominated his close political aide Sergio Gor as the United States ambassador to India, also assigning him the role of special envoy for South and Central Asia. The move comes at a delicate time in US-India relations, amid rising tensions over tariffs and India’s engagement with Russia and China.

Gor, 38, rose rapidly in conservative politics to become a key, though low-profile, aide in the White House, responsible for vetting thousands of presidential appointees for loyalty to Trump. His tenure has included overseas travel and oversight of staff changes within the National Security Council.

Trump praised Gor on Truth Social, calling him someone he “can fully trust to deliver on my Agenda and help us, MAKE AMERICA GREAT AGAIN,” adding, “Sergio will make an incredible Ambassador.”

Gor was born in Uzbekistan when it was still part of the Soviet Union, moved as a child to Malta, and later attended university in the United States. He became active in Republican politics, working with Senator Rand Paul before joining Trump as a fundraiser, book publisher, and director of presidential personnel.

In his White House role, Gor oversaw the filling of nearly 95% of presidential appointments. Trump indicated he would continue in this role until confirmed by the Republican-led Senate as ambassador.

Political and Diplomatic Context
Gor’s nomination comes at a time of heightened US-India tensions, including Trump’s recent tariffs on Indian imports and India’s engagement with Russia and China. US administrations have historically viewed India as a counterbalance to China.

While Trump has relied heavily on political allies rather than career diplomats, the nomination follows a pattern of presidents sending trusted aides to key international posts. Previous US ambassadors to India have included prominent public intellectuals, such as John Kenneth Galbraith and Daniel Patrick Moynihan, while President Biden had appointed former Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti.

Secretary of State Marco Rubio endorsed Gor on X, describing him as “an excellent representative of America in one of the most important relationships our nation has in the world.”
