Bollywood Stars, Hyundai Officials Booked in FIR Over Allegedly Faulty Car Promotion.
Bollywood actors Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, along with six officials from Hyundai, have been named in an FIR in Bharatpur, Rajasthan, over allegations of fraud linked to the promotion of a car alleged to have manufacturing defects.
The case was filed after a complaint by Bharatpur resident Kirti Singh, who purchased a Hyundai Alcazar SUV in June 2022 for ₹23.97 lakh from a dealership in Sonipat, Haryana. Singh claimed that within six to seven months, the vehicle developed serious issues, including engine vibrations, unusual noises at high speeds, and repeated malfunction warnings. When he approached the dealer, Singh was allegedly told that the issues were inherent to the model and could not be resolved, which he argued amounted to a manufacturing defect.
Singh first moved the Chief Judicial Magistrate’s Court in Bharatpur with a private complaint. The court directed police at Mathura Gate station to register a case under Section 420 (cheating) of the IPC and other relevant provisions. An FIR has since been filed, and investigations are underway.
The development comes amid heightened scrutiny of celebrity endorsements, following a 2023 Supreme Court ruling that made brand ambassadors legally accountable for misleading advertisements.
Shah Rukh Khan has been associated with Hyundai since 1998, while Deepika Padukone joined the brand in December 2023. The duo appeared together in a Hyundai campaign last year. As of now, neither Khan nor Padukone has issued a public statement on the matter.
