India registered their second consecutive win over Pakistan in this year’s Asia Cup with another dominant display in Dubai on Sunday, September 22.
The Super 4 clash, once hailed as the pinnacle of cricket’s fiercest rivalry, barely lived up to the hype as India’s top order dismantled Pakistan’s bowling attack.
At the heart of India’s assault was 25-year-old opener Abhishek Sharma, who blazed his way to 74 off just 39 balls, guiding India comfortably past the target of 172 in only 18.5 overs. From the first ball—a short delivery from Shaheen Afridi dispatched into the stands—Abhishek set the tone with authority, showcasing why he has emerged as India’s standout performer of the tournament. Despite some verbal exchanges with Afridi, neither he nor Haris Rauf could slow India’s momentum.
The young star’s heroics left his family overjoyed. His sister, Komal Sharma, expressed her excitement after seeing Abhishek claim the Player of the Match award.
“I always wanted to watch an India vs Pakistan match, and today we came — and he did so well. He’s the Man of the Match, what more can we say? We’re super excited and proud. I truly believe the sky is the limit for him, and he’s going to prove his talent to everyone. The century will come very soon; we’re just waiting for that hundred in this tournament,” she told PTI.
His mother, Manju Sharma, shared her pride and delight over her son’s fearless approach against Shaheen Afridi.
“It was just so fun watching him play today. Even more fun was seeing him hit a six on the very first ball against… well, we all know who. He’s made it a habit. I hope everyone keeps supporting him as he continues to do what he does best,” she said outside the Dubai International Stadium.
Despite Pakistan boasting a strong bowling lineup, India’s top order tore through them with relentless tempo. Pakistan’s batters, led by Sahibzada Farhan’s half-century, managed to post a respectable 171, though Farhan’s innings drew attention for a controversial celebration.
With Abhishek Sharma in sublime form, Pakistan’s bowlers never looked capable of regaining control, leaving India in command throughout.
