Assam to Conduct Second Post-Mortem of Zubeen Garg Amid Public Concerns.
Assam is set to pay its final respects to singer Zubeen Garg, with a second post-mortem scheduled for Tuesday amid ongoing investigations into his untimely death. The move follows calls for clarity, though Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma emphasized that it is being done with the consent of Garg’s family.
The post-mortem will take place at Guwahati Medical College at 7:30 am on September 23, supervised by a team from AIIMS Guwahati. Sarma clarified that while the autopsy conducted in Singapore was thorough and technically sound, the second examination is aimed at avoiding political controversy surrounding Garg’s death.
“It is not a demand from the public but from certain fringe elements, and we have decided to conduct it with his wife’s consent,” Sarma said at a press conference on September 22. “Personally, I was not in favour of ‘cutting up his body,’ but in a democracy, even minority demands are considered.”
Due to the additional procedure, the singer’s final journey will now begin at 9:30 am instead of the originally scheduled 7:30 am. Preparations for the funeral are underway in Kamarkuchi NC village, with authorities and family members coordinating to honor Garg’s legacy.
In tribute to the legendary artist, Assam Minister and Asom Gana Parishad (AGP) Working President Keshab Mahanta announced that 10 bighas of land have been allocated to construct a memorial at the funeral site. Minister Atul Bora added:
“The memorial will reflect the wishes of his family. There is immense love and respect for him. People from across Assam and the country are coming to pay their respects to this popular artist.”
The second post-mortem and upcoming memorial underscore the state’s efforts to honor Zubeen Garg’s legacy while addressing public concerns about his passing.
