Trump to Host Argentina’s Javier Milei at White House Amid $20B Rescue Package.
US President Donald Trump will host Argentina’s President Javier Milei at the White House on October 14, the Argentine government announced, further strengthening ties after a multi-billion-dollar US support package for Argentina.
The meeting comes just two weeks before Argentina’s highly anticipated mid-term elections, which could impact Milei’s right-wing reform agenda. According to Buenos Aires, the talks will reinforce the “strategic alliance” between the US and Argentina.
This will be the second meeting between Trump and Milei in a month. They previously met on the sidelines of the UN General Assembly in New York, where US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent unveiled a $20 billion support program aimed at stabilizing the Argentine peso.
The package, which includes a swap line between the US and Argentine central banks, helped the peso regain strength against the dollar. It may also involve the purchase of Argentine public debt and a direct credit line from the US Treasury, though exact details have not been disclosed.
In an interview with A24 television, Milei — who suffered a setback in early September Buenos Aires provincial elections — praised Trump’s “unprecedented” support. “If Argentina needs the funds, the United States will give us the money to service the debt,” he said, explaining the swap mechanism.
Argentina faces $4 billion in debt repayments in January and $4.5 billion in July 2026. Earlier, the country negotiated a $20 billion loan with the IMF in April, in addition to the $44 billion received in 2018, which was later renegotiated.
