Abhishek Sharma Backs Shubman Gill and Suryakumar Yadav to Be India’s Match-Winners at T20 World Cup.
India opener and world No. 1 T20I batter Abhishek Sharma has expressed full confidence in senior batters Suryakumar Yadav and Shubman Gill, insisting the duo will deliver for India at the upcoming ICC Men’s T20 World Cup.
Despite a lean run in the ongoing five-match T20I series against South Africa—where Gill’s 28 in India’s seven-wicket win in Dharamsala was the highest score by either player across the first three games—Abhishek shrugged off any concerns over their form.
“I tell you one thing straight away—trust me, these two guys are going to win matches at the World Cup and in other series as well,” Abhishek said. “I’ve played with them for so long, especially Shubman, and I know how he can turn games around. I have full faith in him.”
In the third T20I chase of 118, Abhishek and Gill laid the foundation with a 60-run opening partnership in just 5.2 overs. Abhishek struck a brisk 35 off 18 balls, while Gill contributed a steady 28-ball 28, helping India cruise to victory in 15.5 overs.
India’s pacers also played a key role, with Arshdeep Singh (2/13), Harshit Rana (2/34), and Hardik Pandya (1/23) exploiting the conditions to bundle South Africa out for 117.
Addressing his own recent low scores, Suryakumar said:
“I’ve been batting beautifully in the nets. I’m trying everything in my control. The runs will come when they have to, and this is not about form, just about being out of runs.”
India now turn their attention to the fourth T20I, with the series moving to Lucknow on Wednesday.
