Mbappe Double Sends Real Madrid to La Liga Summit
Kylian Mbappe scored twice as Real Madrid claimed a 2-0 win over Villarreal on Saturday, January 24, propelling the team to the top of La Liga.
Madrid now lead Barcelona by two points, with the Catalan side set to host Real Oviedo on Sunday. Mbappe, La Liga’s top scorer, reached 21 goals in the competition this season, helping Madrid overcome a determined Villarreal side currently fourth in the table.
The victory marks Madrid’s third consecutive win across all competitions under new coach Alvaro Arbeloa. Following a shock Copa del Rey defeat to second-tier Albacete in his first match in charge, Arbeloa’s side is beginning to find rhythm.
“Mbappe and Vinicius are the best players in the world. They can really unbalance teams, and we try to get the ball to them as much as possible,” Arbeloa told Real Madrid TV. “They’re committed, pressing first, and their reward comes in the form of goals.”
The match at Villarreal’s Estadio de la Ceramica began with both sides struggling to create clear chances. Villarreal’s Georges Mikautadze missed a volley from a Gerard Moreno cross, while Madrid’s Arda Guler fired straight at goalkeeper Luiz Junior before sending another shot over the bar.
Vinicius, coming off a 6-1 Champions League win over Monaco midweek, played a key role despite extending his goal drought to 13 La Liga games. Two minutes into the second half, his low cross was blocked, but Mbappe was on hand to open the scoring from close range for his 20th league goal of the season.
Villarreal pressed for an equaliser, with Moreno narrowly missing their best opportunity before the break. In stoppage time, Mbappe was fouled by Alfonso Pedraza in the box and cheekily converted the resulting penalty to seal Madrid’s victory.
Villarreal midfielder Alberto Moleiro admitted, “We have to be a bit more accurate in attack against these kinds of teams.” The Yellow Submarine remain 10 points behind leaders Madrid, with a game in hand.
Elsewhere, Espanyol’s 3-2 loss to Valencia leaves them seven points behind Villarreal in fifth place.
