Ola, Uber, and Rapido Drivers to Observe 6-Hour Nationwide Strike Today

Gig workers linked to ride-hailing platforms such as Ola, Uber, and Rapido are staging a six-hour nationwide strike on February 7, calling it an “All India Breakdown.” Drivers plan to stay offline to protest low earnings, arbitrary fare setting, and weak regulation.

Why Drivers Are Protesting
The Telangana Gig and Platform Workers Union (TGPWU), which represents app-based transport workers, says aggregator platforms continue to set fares arbitrarily despite the Motor Vehicle Aggregator Guidelines, 2025.

Lack of government-notified minimum fares has caused falling incomes and income uncertainty for drivers.

Use of private vehicles for commercial transport is creating unfair competition for licensed drivers.

The union says, “Millions of app-based drivers are pushed into poverty while aggregators profit. Govt silence equals platform impunity.” The strike aims to press the government for immediate action and dialogue with worker representatives.

Key Demands of Drivers

Immediate notification of minimum base fares for cabs, autos, bike taxis, and other aggregator-based services, finalized in consultation with driver unions.

Strict ban on private, non-commercial vehicles for commercial passenger and goods transport, to protect licensed drivers.

Economic Context
The Economic Survey 2025–26 highlighted income instability among gig workers:

About 40% earn less than Rs 15,000 per month.

Number of gig workers rose to 1.2 crore in FY25, up 55% from FY21.

The sector now represents over 2% of India’s total workforce.
The Survey recommended stronger competition rules and greater transparency in platform algorithms.

With drivers staying offline for six hours, ride-hailing services are expected to face disruptions across several cities. The strike reflects growing frustration among app-based transport workers over fares, regulation, and income security.
