J&K LG Reviews Security Situation Following Protests Over Khamenei’s Death.
Jammu and Kashmir Lieutenant Governor Manoj Sinha on Sunday chaired a high-level meeting to review the security situation across the Union Territory after protests erupted in several parts of Kashmir over the reported killing of Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei in coordinated US-Israeli strikes.
Taking to X, Sinha said, “Chaired a meeting to review the security situation across J&K UT. Called upon all communities to stay peaceful and calm. I salute the unwavering, synchronised resolve of our Police and security forces upholding law and order.”
Protests broke out across multiple districts, especially in Shia-majority areas, where hundreds of demonstrators marched on streets, chanting slogans such as “Tum kitne Hosseini maroge…har ghar se Hosseini niklega” (“How many Hosseini will you kill…from every home, a Hosseini will rise”). In some areas, protesters burned an effigy of US President Donald Trump.
In response, the J&K government ordered schools and colleges in the Valley to remain closed for two days as a precaution. Police in Pulwama also urged media organisations, journalists, social media users, and the public to report responsibly and avoid sharing unverified information related to law and order or public gatherings.
Jammu and Kashmir Chief Minister Omar Abdullah appealed for calm, urging authorities to allow peaceful mourning while exercising restraint in maintaining law and order. “We must ensure that those mourning in Jammu and Kashmir are allowed to grieve peacefully. The police and administration should exercise utmost restraint and refrain from using force or restrictive measures,” he said.
Protests were reported beyond Kashmir, including parts of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh, with the All India Shia Personal Law Board organising a large demonstration at Lucknow’s Chhota Imambara on Sunday evening.
