NDA–TVK Alliance Buzz Fades After Rajinikanth Remark Row

Speculation over a possible alliance between the BJP-led NDA and actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) for the upcoming Tamil Nadu Assembly elections has largely fizzled out, following a controversy involving remarks about superstar Rajinikanth.

The backlash—triggered by comments from TVK general secretary Aadhav Arjuna—has drawn sharp criticism from both the Bharatiya Janata Party and the All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam, effectively stalling any momentum around a potential tie-up. Neither the ruling Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam nor Rajinikanth has responded to the controversy.

Alliance Talks and Political Calculations

In recent weeks, reports of backchannel talks between the NDA and TVK had gained traction. BJP leaders were said to have offered TVK up to 80 seats and even the Deputy Chief Minister’s post to build a united front against the DMK. There were also claims that Vijay sought the Chief Minister’s position in return—though TVK leaders consistently denied any such negotiations.

The speculation intensified when Vijay travelled to Delhi in connection with a CBI probe linked to the Karur rally stampede case. However, the latest controversy appears to have derailed those discussions.

Rajinikanth Remark Sparks Backlash

The turning point came after Aadhav Arjuna claimed that Rajinikanth had stepped away from politics due to pressure from the DMK’s first family—remarks aimed at projecting Vijay’s resolve but widely seen as crossing a line.

AIADMK chief Edappadi K Palaniswami strongly condemned the comments, calling them politically indecent and defending Rajinikanth’s stature.

“Rajinikanth is admired beyond politics. Choosing whether or not to enter public life is a personal decision that must be respected,” he said.

BJP leader K Annamalai also dismissed the claims, praising Rajinikanth’s decades-long career as proof of his resilience and influence.

A Four-Cornered Contest Takes Shape

With alliance possibilities now uncertain, Tamil Nadu appears headed for a multi-cornered contest. The DMK is seeking a second consecutive term, while the AIADMK—now back in alliance with the BJP—is aiming for a comeback after recent electoral setbacks.

Meanwhile, Vijay’s TVK is preparing for its electoral debut, banking on his mass appeal. The party hopes to replicate the political success of icons like C N Annadurai and M G Ramachandran.

Actor-politician Seeman’s Naam Tamilar Katchi remains the fourth key player, setting the stage for a tightly contested election in the state.
