Iran Appoints Mohammad Zolghadr as Security Chief After Ali Larijani’s Killing

Iran has appointed Mohammad Bagher Zolghadr as the new secretary of its Supreme National Security Council, days after the killing of senior leader Ali Larijani in a strike last week.

Zolghadr, a former commander of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was previously serving as secretary of the Expediency Council. His appointment comes at a critical time as tensions in the region remain high.

Larijani, a key adviser to Iran’s Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei, was considered an influential figure within Iran’s power structure, known for his ability to navigate internal political factions and engage in international negotiations. His death is being seen as a significant blow to the Iranian leadership.

War Talks and Rising Tensions

Meanwhile, Donald Trump said the United States is holding “productive” talks with Tehran, raising hopes of a possible de-escalation. However, Iran has denied that any such negotiations are underway, even as hostilities continue.

Trump has extended the deadline for Iran to reopen the strategically vital Strait of Hormuz, stating that the US will delay potential strikes on Iranian power infrastructure for five days to allow diplomatic efforts to continue.

Iranian officials claimed the US decision reflects a step back following what they described as Tehran’s “firm warning”. At the same time, a spokesperson for Iran’s top military command said the armed forces would continue fighting “until complete victory”.

Rising Casualties

The ongoing conflict has led to heavy casualties across the region. Reports indicate that over 1,500 people have been killed in Iran and more than 1,000 in Lebanon, along with casualties reported in Israel and among US military personnel. Millions have also been displaced in Iran and Lebanon due to the escalating violence.
