Harsimrat Badal launches attack on Bhagwant Mann, demands resignation over Assembly controversy

Shiromani Akali Dal MP Harsimrat Kaur Badal launched a sharp attack on Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann, claiming he has “no moral right” to continue in office and should resign immediately.

In a post on X, she wrote, “Look at the difference between the chief minister’s words and his deeds.”

She alleged that Mann was present in the Punjab Assembly “in an inebriated state” while speaking on labour issues, even as, according to her, police action was taking place outside his residence in Sangrur against women protesting for their rights.

“Yesterday, when he was in the Assembly in an inebriated state, reciting poetry for labourers and putting on a drama of being sympathetic to them, at the exact same time outside his own home in Sangrur, his police were shoving and pushing our sisters who were demanding their rights,” she said.

She further added, “Bhagwant Mann no longer has any moral right to remain chief minister; he should resign immediately.”

Opposition raises allegations during Punjab Assembly session

The controversy erupted during a special one-day session of the Punjab Assembly on Friday when opposition leaders, including Congress members, accused Mann of attending the House in an intoxicated state and demanded an alcohol test.

The dispute began after Mann objected to Congress MLA Sukhpal Singh Khaira allegedly using a mobile phone inside the Assembly. In response, Khaira reportedly made remarks about the Chief Minister’s family, escalating tensions on the floor of the House.

Mann, in a heated exchange, responded in what appeared to be a slurred speech, further intensifying the confrontation between treasury and opposition benches.

Following this, Khaira and senior Congress leader Partap Singh Bajwa demanded that the Chief Minister undergo an alcohol test. Bajwa later wrote to the Speaker of the Punjab Assembly seeking mandatory alcohol meter and dope testing for all MLAs, to be conducted by a medical team from PGIMER.

He also warned that Congress legislators would boycott proceedings unless the Chief Minister is cleared of the allegations.
