IPL Play of the Day: Jamie Overton masters death overs, sinks Mumbai Indians

Jamie Overton is no longer the bowler he was at the start of the Indian Premier League 2026 season — and the transformation has been dramatic.

Rewind to April in Bengaluru, when Tim David tore him apart for 30 runs in a single over at the M. Chinnaswamy Stadium. Nothing worked that night. Overton’s attempts to cramp the batter only played into David’s hands, with the ball repeatedly disappearing into the stands.

Fast forward to May 2, and the script had completely flipped.

At the MA Chidambaram Stadium, Overton emerged as a match-winner for Chennai Super Kings in their commanding victory over Mumbai Indians in the IPL’s marquee ‘El Clasico’. Handed the toughest job — bowling at the death — he delivered with precision and composure, shutting down the likes of Hardik Pandya, Naman Dhir and Robin Minz.

Conceding just one boundary in his spell, Overton ensured MI never got the late surge they were counting on.

How Overton choked MI

With five overs remaining and six wickets in hand, MI looked set to push past 180. Instead, they managed just 39 runs — a collapse triggered largely by Overton’s two overs.

He turned the death overs into a stranglehold. Mixing sharp short balls with deceptive off-cutters, Overton never allowed the batters to settle. The key moment came with the dismissal of Dhir — a well-disguised off-cutter at 123.8 kmph that gripped the surface and forced a mistimed shot.

Pandya, one of the most dangerous finishers in the game, was kept quiet with hostile, well-directed short-pitched bowling. Operating above 145 kmph, Overton cramped him for room and denied any clean hitting opportunities.

His penultimate over summed up the control — just four runs conceded, no boundaries, and relentless pressure.

From vulnerability to weapon

Not long ago, Overton’s role at the death was a concern. Even Sunil Gavaskar had flagged bowling as CSK’s biggest weakness early in the season, especially after three straight losses.

But Overton has flipped that narrative.

From being targeted to becoming a go-to option in crunch moments, he has evolved rapidly. His raw pace, smart variations and growing confidence have turned him into a genuine death-overs weapon. Even his numbers reflect the turnaround — his economy rate of 9.04 drops significantly when excluding that one difficult outing in Bengaluru.

Since then, he has delivered consistently — including a four-wicket haul against Delhi Capitals and a three-wicket performance against Sunrisers Hyderabad.

With this win, CSK have reignited their campaign and are firmly back in the playoff race. As the tournament enters its decisive phase, Overton’s resurgence could prove to be a defining factor in their push for the top four.
