How many times have we seen Sunil Narine spin a web around opposition batters and drag Kolkata Knight Riders to victory?
Time and again, whenever KKR have found themselves under pressure, Narine has stepped forward to change the course of the game. That is precisely why the franchise has continued to back him year after year, building a relationship that stretches far beyond the IPL and across multiple Knight Riders teams around the world.
On Wednesday, Narine once again reminded everyone why he remains one of the most feared T20 spinners in world cricket. The veteran returned figures of 4-0-13-1 and completely choked the Mumbai Indians batting line-up as KKR sealed a crucial four-wicket win. On a surface where timing the ball was never easy, Narine’s spell ensured Mumbai never recovered after their disastrous powerplay collapse. Without his control through the middle overs, KKR could easily have been staring at a far steeper chase.
Mumbai were already wobbling at 46 for four inside the powerplay, but Narine’s role was far from over. His responsibility was to make sure there was no route back into the contest for the opposition. With his trademark accuracy, clever changes of pace and subtle variations off the surface, Narine completely shut down any chance of momentum shifting back towards Mumbai.
HOW NARINE LOCKED DOWN MUMBAI
In a format designed to favour batters, conceding just one boundary in a full four-over spell underlines the level of control Narine possessed. He bowled 16 dot balls and never allowed players like Tilak Varma, Hardik Pandya or Corbin Bosch to dictate terms.
The middle overs became a complete chokehold. Narine slowed the game down, forced Mumbai’s batters into defensive mode and steadily squeezed the life out of the innings.
Tilak looked uncertain from the moment Narine entered the attack. The left-hander struggled to pick the variation between the off-break and the carrom ball, often getting stuck on the crease while trying to read him from the hand. Even after Tilak briefly released the pressure with a slog-swept six, Narine instantly regrouped and went back to attacking disciplined areas.
Hardik never looked comfortable either. Narine cramped him for room repeatedly while cleverly mixing his pace. One sharp delivery straightened past the outside edge before the spinner eventually produced the breakthrough — an off-break that spun through Hardik’s defence and crashed into the stumps.
Bosch found no escape route as well. Narine fired in a relentless stream of dot balls, denying him any opportunity to free his arms. By the time the spell ended, Mumbai had completely lost any hope of finishing strongly.
ONE FINAL PUSH AWAITS
Narine has played a massive role in KKR’s resurgence this season. After a poor start to the campaign, Kolkata have now won six of their last seven matches to keep their playoff hopes alive heading into the final stretch.
Their fate will now come down to a high-pressure clash against Delhi Capitals on May 24 at Eden Gardens.
By the time KKR step onto the field, they will already know the equation. A win for Rajasthan Royals earlier in the day could end Kolkata’s campaign before the match even begins. But if results go their way, KKR will have one final opportunity to force their way into the top four.
And if Kolkata are searching for inspiration in such a moment, history suggests Narine is the man they will look towards once again.
The mystery spinner has traditionally enjoyed bowling against Delhi, picking up 31 wickets against them at an economy rate of 6.64. With the Capitals struggling for consistency this season and Eden Gardens expected to assist spin once again, Narine could once more become the defining factor in a knockout-like encounter.
Do not be surprised if Narine produces another masterclass, ties the Delhi batters in knots and keeps KKR’s playoff dream alive yet again.
