CWG 2026 Day 5: Gulveer Creates History, Harjinder Wins Silver as India Reach 12 Medals

India enjoyed another productive day at the Glasgow 2026 Commonwealth Games on July 28, with Gulveer Singh scripting history in athletics and Harjinder Kaur adding another silver in weightlifting. Three Indian boxers also booked semi-final spots, ensuring at least three more medals for the country.

India’s medal tally rose to 12 medals — 2 gold, 7 silver and 3 bronze — keeping the contingent in the top 10 of the overall standings.

Gulveer Singh Makes History in 10,000m

Gulveer Singh became the first Indian man to win a Commonwealth Games medal in a long-distance track event after claiming silver in the men’s 10,000m.

Running in challenging rainy conditions, Gulveer stayed with the leading group before producing a strong final-lap sprint to finish second in 27:49.78. Australia’s Ky Robinson won gold, while Isle of Man’s David Mullarkey took bronze.

The race also marked the first time since 1986 that no African runner finished on the podium in the event.

Harjinder Kaur Upgrades to Silver

Weightlifter Harjinder Kaur improved on her Birmingham 2022 bronze by winning silver in the women’s 69kg category.

Harjinder recorded a combined lift of 221kg, including 101kg in the snatch and 120kg in the clean and jerk. Canada’s Charlotte Simoneau claimed gold with a Games record, while Australia’s Olivia Hayman finished third.

  • The medal was India’s seventh from weightlifting at the Games.
  • Three Boxers Assure India More Medals

India guaranteed three boxing medals after three pugilists advanced to the semi-finals, where both losing semi-finalists receive bronze medals.

Jadumani Singh Mandengbam (Men’s 55kg) defeated Zambia’s Mwengo Mwale by unanimous decision.

Priya Ghanghas (Women’s 60kg) overcame Scotland’s Niamh Mitchell with a dominant display.

Preeti Pawar (Women’s 54kg) continued her impressive campaign by winning her quarter-final to enter the last four.

Mixed Results Elsewhere

India also endured a few disappointments in boxing. Parveen Hooda exited the women’s 65kg event after losing to England’s Sacha Hickey, while Kapil Pokhariya was beaten by Scotland’s Robert McNulty in the men’s 90kg quarter-finals.

In athletics, Pooja Singh finished eighth in the women’s high jump after clearing 1.77m, with heavy rain disrupting the competition.

On the track, Vishal TK qualified for the men’s 400m semi-finals, while Rajesh Ramesh failed to progress.

In swimming, Srihari Nataraj missed out on the men’s 100m backstroke final after finishing 12th overall in the semi-finals, while Sajan Prakash exited in the men’s 50m butterfly heats.

In lawn bowls, Nayanmoni Saikia lost her women’s singles Section C match to Wales’ Amy Williams.

India will now look to build on its momentum as the Commonwealth Games move into another medal-heavy day.
