Myanmar’s detained former leader Aung San Suu Kyi on Monday met a representative of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC).
The country’s government said, marking a rare interaction with an international organisation amid continued concerns over her health.
The 81-year-old Nobel Peace Prize laureate has been held in detention since February 2021, when Myanmar’s military overthrew her elected civilian government in a coup that plunged the country into prolonged political turmoil and armed conflict.
Since her detention, Suu Kyi’s whereabouts and health have remained largely unknown, with no foreign leader or international envoy publicly confirming a meeting with her.
Government spokesperson Khine Khine Soe said Suu Kyi met Arnaud de Baecque, the ICRC’s resident representative in Myanmar, in the capital, Naypyitaw. The announcement was made through a post on Telegram.
The International Committee of the Red Cross did not immediately respond to a request for comment on the reported meeting.
The development comes months after Myanmar’s authorities said Suu Kyi had been transferred from prison to house arrest following a military-organised election that resulted in former junta chief Min Aung Hlaing becoming the country’s president. The move was announced amid growing international pressure over her continued detention.
