Lionel Messi made an emotional return to competitive football just four days.
After the death of his father, Jorge Messi, featuring for Inter Miami in their crucial Leagues Cup encounter against Leon on Wednesday, August 12.
The Argentine star had stepped away from football following his father’s death on August 8. Messi travelled to Rosario, his hometown, to attend the funeral before making a surprise return to Miami ahead of Inter Miami’s final group-stage fixture.
Messi was named among the substitutes against Leon and entered the match at half-time, completing the entire second half. His comeback came despite the emotional uncertainty he had expressed in a tribute to his father.
Messi Had Questioned His Future
Following Jorge Messi’s death, the Inter Miami captain shared an emotional message reflecting on the enormous role his father played throughout his life and career.
Messi described Jorge as not only his father but also his friend and representative. Jorge managed his son’s career from his early days in Rosario and remained a key figure as Messi developed into one of football’s most decorated players.
The loss appeared to leave Messi uncertain about what the future held. In his tribute, he acknowledged that he did not know how he would move forward and questioned whether he would continue playing football for much longer.
Jorge Messi’s Influence on His Son’s Career
Jorge was a constant presence during Messi’s rise from a young footballer in Rosario to a global superstar. He accompanied his son during the early stages of his career and later served as his agent.
His influence remained significant throughout Messi’s career, including during the Argentine captain’s international journey and the team’s successful World Cup campaign.
Emotional Comeback Ends in Defeat
Messi’s return came at a difficult moment for Inter Miami. The club had suffered a 2-1 defeat against Monterrey in its previous Leagues Cup match, with Messi absent following his father’s death.
Needing a positive result against Leon to keep their campaign alive, Miami initially kept Messi on the bench before introducing him at the start of the second half.
Despite his return, Inter Miami could not secure the result they needed. Leon eventually won the match 3-2, leaving Messi and his teammates to deal with another disappointing night after an intensely emotional week for the Argentine star.
