India produced a commanding performance at the Women’s Hockey World Cup, defeating South Africa 6-1 to register their biggest-ever win in the tournament and move within touching distance of the second round.

Sunelita Toppo, Navneet Kaur, Sushila Chanu, Deepika, Lalremsiami and Sakshi Rana were on the scoresheet as India collected three points and moved to the top of Group D.

China’s 4-2 victory over England kept them second in the group. With India and China having drawn 2-2 earlier, the final pool match against England on August 20 will determine India’s qualification. India need only a draw to secure their place in the next round.

India Make Strong Statement

The victory has raised hopes among Indian fans, particularly given the team’s attacking intent and depth.

India’s previous biggest World Cup victory was a 4-1 win over Spain in 1974, the same tournament in which India reached the semi-finals for the last time.

Under coach Paul van Ass, India have shown growing confidence and consistency. Their attacking performance against China had already suggested that the team could challenge the tournament’s stronger sides, and the victory over South Africa reinforced that belief.

India started brightly, with Lalremsiami testing the South African goalkeeper in the second minute. South Africa responded with dangerous counter-attacks, forcing goalkeeper Bichu Devi to make an excellent early save.

India, however, continued to push forward. Their persistence finally paid off in the 11th minute when Sunelita Toppo found the net with a simple finish to put India ahead.

Navneet Kaur doubled the advantage early in the second quarter. India won a penalty corner, and Navneet used a clever movement before finding the back of the net.

India continued to create opportunities and eventually added a third goal through Sushila Chanu after another penalty-corner sequence.

Navneet highlighted the contribution of India’s younger players after the match.

“We have 11 players who have like first time playing in the World Cup,” she said, praising the young players who contributed to the victory.

India Maintain Attacking Approach

India continued to dominate after the break, refusing to take their foot off the accelerator.

The team finished with 51.6% possession, 16 shots on target and 25 circle penetrations. They also converted two of their six penalty corners.

Deepika made it 4-0 in the 38th minute with a powerful tomahawk strike that left the South African goalkeeper with little chance.

Lalremsiami then marked her recent Arjuna Award recognition with a goal in the 44th minute. Receiving a long pass from Neha, she calmly finished past the goalkeeper to make it 5-0.

Just a minute later, Sakshi Rana completed India’s remarkable scoring spree. She reacted quickest to a loose ball after an attacking move involving Salima Tete and Ishika Chaudhary before sending a reverse shot into the top corner.

South Africa eventually pulled one goal back through De Waal from a penalty corner, but the result was never in serious doubt.

India now turn their attention to England. A point from their final Group D match on August 20 will be enough to send them into the second round, leaving the team with a clear path to continue what has been an impressive World Cup campaign.
