Jaishankar Meets Putin, Highlights Major Growth in India-Russia Economic Ties

External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar met Russian President Vladimir Putin in Moscow on Monday, with discussions focusing on bilateral relations, economic cooperation and key global developments.

Jaishankar, who is on a two-day visit to Russia, conveyed Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s greetings to Putin and handed over a personal message from the Indian leader.

During the meeting, Jaishankar highlighted the significant expansion of India-Russia economic ties, pointing to cooperation in areas including trade, energy, fertilisers and nuclear power.

He said India had a strong record of cooperation to present and noted that Modi looked forward to meeting Putin at the upcoming Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit. He also said Modi would welcome Putin to India for the BRICS Summit and that the two leaders would hold their annual summit at a mutually convenient time.

PUTIN HIGHLIGHTS RISING TRADE

Putin said trade between Russia and India had increased this year and underlined Moscow’s continued commitment to supplying fertilisers to India.

The Russian president said his country was increasing fertiliser supplies and was prepared to maintain the flow in the future. He also asked Jaishankar to convey his best wishes to Modi.

Putin expressed hope of meeting the Indian prime minister soon on the sidelines of the SCO meeting.

ECONOMIC TIES IN FOCUS

The Jaishankar-Putin meeting comes as New Delhi and Moscow look to further strengthen economic engagement and broaden cooperation across multiple sectors.

Earlier on Monday, Jaishankar held talks with Russian First Deputy Prime Minister Denis Manturov, focusing on measures to expand bilateral trade and economic cooperation.

Jaishankar’s visit also comes ahead of Putin’s expected trip to New Delhi for the BRICS leaders’ summit on September 12-13, making the discussions particularly significant for the next phase of India-Russia relations.
