Indian-Origin Student Killed After Car Crashes Into Ocean Off California Coast

A 19-year-old Indian-origin student at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC) died.

After the car she was travelling in plunged from a cliff into the ocean near Steamer Lane in Santa Cruz, California.

The victim was identified as Alli Renee Singh, a psychology student and member of UCSC’s John R Lewis College community. She had enrolled at the university in June 2024 and was preparing to begin her third year, according to NRI Pulse.

CAR PLUNGES INTO OCEAN

The accident occurred on April 13 near the popular Steamer Lane surf area. Emergency responders arriving at the scene found the vehicle submerged along the rocky coastline.

A male passenger managed to escape from the water and sustained minor injuries.

Singh, however, remained trapped inside the vehicle. Four professional divers were involved in the rescue operation and eventually brought her out of the submerged car.

She was transported by ambulance to a nearby hospital, where she later died from her injuries, according to the Fire Department.

FAMILY CONFIRMS DEATH

Singh’s aunt, Monica Singh-Strohmeier, confirmed her death in a social media post and requested privacy for the family.

She described Singh as a “very smart, beautiful, and loving young lady” and said she would be deeply missed by those who knew her.

Singh was originally from Selma in Fresno County and was pursuing psychology at UCSC.

Her aunt also asked people to respect the family’s privacy, particularly that of Singh’s mother, as arrangements for the funeral were being finalised.

COASTAL EROSION UNDER SCRUTINY

The fatal crash has also drawn attention to safety concerns along the coastline near the accident site.

A section of West Cliff Drive has reportedly suffered substantial damage from ongoing coastal erosion. The erosion has narrowed the distance between the roadway and the cliff edge, raising concerns about the safety of people travelling through the area.

The incident follows another fatal crash in the Santa Cruz Mountains in June, when three people died after a vehicle reportedly lost control and plunged about 400 feet down an embankment.

Authorities are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding Singh’s crash.
