Ajit Doval, Wang Yi Hold India-China Boundary Talks; Next Round To Be Hosted By India In 2027

India and China have agreed to hold the 26th round of Special Representatives’ Talks on the boundary question in India in 2027

As National Security Adviser Ajit Doval and Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi held detailed discussions in Beijing on strengthening dialogue and maintaining peace along the border. The 25th round of the talks took place in Beijing on Tuesday, with Doval and Wang co-chairing the meeting as the designated representatives of the two countries.

According to the Ministry of External Affairs, Doval stressed that maintaining peace and tranquillity along the border remains essential for the continued development of India-China relations.

The two sides held a candid and detailed exchange of views on the boundary issue, taking forward the understanding reached between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping. Both agreed to continue working towards a political settlement of the dispute while keeping the long-term interests of the two countries in mind.

India also expressed its willingness to strengthen strategic communication with China, expand mutually beneficial cooperation and deepen coordination in multilateral forums. The discussions covered better management of border areas, efforts to resolve boundary-related issues and measures to support the improvement of bilateral ties.

China’s Foreign Ministry said both countries reaffirmed their commitment to the Special Representatives’ mechanism to seek a fair, reasonable and mutually acceptable solution to the boundary question. The process will continue to follow the political guiding principles agreed upon in 2005.

Focus on border management and cooperation

The talks also covered ways to advance boundary negotiations, strengthen existing border management mechanisms and expand cooperation across the border.

Both sides agreed to continue addressing the boundary issue through dialogue and consultation while jointly working to preserve peace and tranquillity along the frontier.

The next round of Special Representatives’ Talks will be held in India in 2027, marking the 26th meeting under the mechanism.

Wang Yi said a healthy and stable India-China relationship was in the fundamental interests of both countries and had broader implications for the Global South and the international community.

Describing India and China as important neighbours, major developing nations and prominent emerging economies, Wang said their relationship carried strategic significance beyond their bilateral ties.

During his Beijing visit, Doval also met Chinese Vice President Han Zheng. Their discussions included maintaining peace and stability in border areas and strengthening bilateral cooperation.

The decision to host the next round of boundary talks in India reflects the continued use of the Special Representatives’ mechanism as New Delhi and Beijing seek to manage differences and address the boundary dispute through sustained dialogue.
