Railroad South Fire: Massive Oklahoma Wildfire Destroys Homes Near Indiahoma

A large and destructive wildfire erupted southeast of Indiahoma, Oklahoma, on Saturday afternoon, rapidly spreading northward and threatening structures in the area.

The Railroad South Fire began as a grass fire shortly after 3:30 pm on August 29 before quickly moving toward properties between Gore Boulevard and Cache Road near Holsey Acres Road. Within minutes, three structures were fully engulfed.

Firefighters made progress by around 6 pm, but crews continued battling the blaze as it threatened nearby homes and properties. At least five residential structures were reported damaged or destroyed, according to local emergency officials.

Evacuations Ordered As Fire Spreads

The fast-moving wildfire prompted evacuations in parts of western Comanche County. Around 200 responders from local, federal and tribal agencies were involved in the firefighting operation.

Authorities later said the fire’s forward progression had been stopped and its eastern and western flanks were under control. The evacuation order was subsequently lifted, although firefighters continued monitoring hotspots and embers overnight.

Officials warned residents returning to the area about heavy firefighting activity, smoke, reduced visibility and debris along affected roads.

Dramatic Visuals Emerge

Dramatic images and videos from the scene showed aircraft assisting firefighters as flames and smoke spread across the affected area. A social media post showing air support described the operation as taking place on the Railroad South Fire east of Indiahoma and offered prayers for families displaced by the blaze and firefighters working on the ground.

Three civilians were reportedly taken for medical treatment, though their conditions were not immediately known. Authorities urged people to stay away from the fire zone and allow emergency crews to continue their work.

The situation remains under monitoring as crews work to extinguish remaining hotspots and prevent the fire from reigniting.
