Neeraj Chopra’s Absence Opens Door for Sri Lanka’s Rumesh to Dominate Diamond League Final

In the absence of Neeraj Chopra, Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage produced a stunning performance to win his maiden Diamond League final in the men’s javelin.

The victory capped a remarkable 2026 season for the Sri Lankan star, who has won every major competition he has entered this year.

Rumesh sealed the title in Brussels on Saturday with a massive throw of 89.04 metres, finishing ahead of a field that included 2025 world champion Keshorn Walcott and 2024 Diamond League final winner Anderson Peters.

The 2026 breakout star was in control for most of the contest. He opened with a modest 80.42m effort, placing third after the first round behind Walcott and Peters. He then found his rhythm, producing his winning 89.04m throw in the third round before adding efforts of 85.96m and 85.76m in his next two attempts.

Poland’s 26-year-old Dawid Wagner finished second with a personal-best throw of 87.47m. Walcott’s best effort was 83.99m, while Peters managed 83.70m.

For Neeraj Chopra, however, the Diamond League final was one competition too many to miss. The Indian javelin superstar was ruled out for the remainder of the season following the Lausanne Diamond League after suffering a ligament tear in his ankle during training.

RUMESH’S INDIA CONNECTION

Lausanne was only Neeraj’s third competition of an injury-hit 2026 season. His absence has coincided with Rumesh’s emergence as one of the biggest names in world javelin.

The Sri Lankan has produced two throws beyond 90 metres this season and has consistently breached the 85m mark. He has won 10 competitions in 2026 with throws of more than 85 metres, making his Diamond League triumph a fitting conclusion to his breakthrough year.

Rumesh will now head into the Asian Games as one of the leading contenders for gold. His remarkable rise has also been aided by a connection with India.

A former fast bowler, Rumesh switched from cricket to javelin in 2017 after spending several years pursuing the sport. His breakthrough came at the 2025 NC Classic, an invitational event where he received an entry following a recommendation from Neeraj Chopra.

Since then, Rumesh has continued to climb the international rankings. If he can sustain his current form, the Sri Lankan star could emerge as one of the leading contenders for javelin gold at the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics.
