Mamta Kulkarni is back in the spotlight after videos of the former Bollywood star dancing to some of her biggest ’90s hits surfaced online.

Kulkarni, who was recently honoured with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the 14th Rajasthan Film Festival in Jaipur, surprised fans when she joined students on stage and danced to songs from her films.

She was seen grooving to popular tracks including ‘Koi Jaaye To Le Aaye’ from Ghatak, ‘Ek Munda Meri Umar Ka’ from Karan Arjun and ‘Lamba Lamba Ghunghat’ from Sabse Bada Khiladi.

The videos quickly drew attention, particularly because of Kulkarni’s appearance. Dressed in a glamorous outfit, she looked markedly different from the saffron-clad spiritual figure she became known as after taking sanyas in 2025.

Social media users had plenty to say about the unexpected throwback.

Some questioned the contrast between her Bollywood appearance and her spiritual identity, while others simply praised her looks and energy.

Comments included, “Bhai ye to sanyashi ho gayi thi,” and “Ye to sadhu ban gayi thi na.” Another user joked, “From moksh to maya reverse concept,” while someone else referred to her as “Mahamandaleshwar.”

Several users, however, focused on her appearance rather than her transformation.

“She looks amazing,” one person wrote, while another called her “My generation ka super star.” A third user commented, “She is very glamorous and gorgeous.”

When Did Mamta Kulkarni Take Sanyas?

Kulkarni took sanyas during the Maha Kumbh in Prayagraj on January 24, 2025. She performed the Pind Daan ritual at the Sangam and was given the spiritual name Shri Yamai Mamta Nand Giri.

She was subsequently appointed Mahamandaleshwar of the Kinnar Akhara, though her appointment led to controversy within the Akhara.

Kulkarni announced her resignation from the position in February 2025, but later said her resignation had not been accepted and that she would continue on her spiritual path.

Why Did Mamta Kulkarni Leave Bollywood?

Kulkarni stepped away from Bollywood after becoming one of the prominent actresses of the 1990s. She remained away from Mumbai for nearly 24 years before returning in 2024.

During her time away, she was linked to Vicky Goswami, who has been described in media reports as an alleged drug trafficker. In 2016, Thane Police named Kulkarni as an accused in a drug-related case linked to Goswami and alleged that she had attended a meeting in Kenya connected to the case.

Kulkarni denied any involvement in the drug trade.

A significant legal development came in 2024 when the Bombay High Court quashed the case against her, observing that the proceedings were manifestly frivolous and that there was insufficient material to continue the prosecution.

Kulkarni returned to Mumbai in December 2024 after years away. At the time, she said she was not planning a return to Bollywood and remained focused on her spiritual journey.

Mamta Kulkarni’s ’90s Bollywood Run

Before stepping away from films, Kulkarni was one of the recognisable faces of 1990s Hindi cinema.

Her filmography included Tirangaa, Aashik Aawara, Waqt Hamara Hai, Krantiveer, Karan Arjun, Sabse Bada Khiladi, Ghatak and China Gate.

She won the Filmfare Lux New Face of the Year award for Aashik Aawara in 1994.

Years later, her dance videos have brought her ’90s Bollywood persona back into public conversation—this time alongside the very different spiritual identity she adopted in 2025.
