Why Rahul Gandhi Summoned Kanhaiya Kumar After DUSU Defeat, What He Asked

Congress leader and Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi has sought an explanation from NSUI in-charge Kanhaiya Kumar and national president Vinod Jakhar following the student organisation’s complete rout in the Delhi University Students’ Union elections.

The NSUI failed to win any of the four central-panel posts, while the ABVP secured three. Former NSUI member Deepanshu Shokeen, who contested as an independent, won the vice-president’s post with more than 30,000 votes.

The meeting, held on Monday, focused on the reasons behind the defeat and the organisation’s candidate-selection and election strategy. Gandhi is learnt to have asked the two leaders pointed questions about the decisions that led to the setback, according to reports.

Shokeen Ticket Decision Under Scrutiny

One of the key issues discussed was why Shokeen was not accommodated as an NSUI candidate. Shokeen had previously been active with the student organisation but eventually contested the vice-president’s election independently after a dispute over the ticket.

According to reports, NSUI leaders told Gandhi that the conditions put forward by Shokeen were considered unreasonable. However, Gandhi was reportedly dissatisfied with how the issue was handled.

There are differing accounts of the ticket dispute. A senior Congress leader, Amitabh Dubey, said Shokeen had been offered the presidential ticket but declined it and chose to contest for vice-president independently. Other reports, however, say Shokeen wanted the vice-president’s position and disputed the claim that he had been offered the presidency.

Focus on Youth Outreach

The DUSU result has drawn attention within the Congress at a time when Gandhi’s student outreach campaign, “Chhatron Ki Goonj”, has been attracting students at events across the country.

Party leaders are now reviewing the NSUI’s organisational functioning, candidate selection and engagement with students and younger voters. The DUSU defeat has also prompted an internal assessment of whether the organisation is sufficiently connected with campus-level workers and student concerns.

The meeting comes after an emergency review within the Congress following the DUSU results, with senior leaders examining the factors behind NSUI’s failure to secure a central-panel seat.
