Lauki Benefits: How This Hydrating Vegetable Supports Digestion and Overall Health

3

Bottle gourd, popularly known as lauki, is a common vegetable that can offer several nutritional benefits when included as part of a balanced diet.

Its high water content, fibre and essential nutrients make it a light addition to everyday meals. According to Dr Smita Srivastava, Medical Officer in Charge at Ayush Hospital in Raebareli, Uttar Pradesh, bottle gourd can also be consumed as a fresh juice, although proper precautions are important.

Lauki contains nutrients such as dietary fibre, magnesium, protein, calcium and vitamin C. Including it in the diet can contribute to overall nutrient intake while its high water content makes it particularly suitable during hot weather.

Helps Maintain Hydration

Because bottle gourd contains a high proportion of water, it can contribute to daily fluid intake. Consuming water-rich foods may help maintain hydration, particularly during hot or humid conditions when the body loses fluids through sweating.

May Support Digestion

Bottle gourd is relatively light and contains dietary fibre, which can support regular bowel movements and digestive health. Including fibre-rich vegetables in meals may also help prevent constipation and contribute to a healthier gut.

Can Fit Into a Weight-Management Diet

Lauki is naturally low in calories and contains plenty of water, making it a filling addition to a balanced diet. Replacing higher-calorie foods with vegetables such as bottle gourd can support calorie management when combined with an appropriate diet and regular physical activity.

How to Consume Lauki Safely

If preparing bottle gourd juice, always use fresh, properly washed produce. Mint leaves can be added for flavour if desired. Most importantly, never consume bottle gourd juice if it tastes bitter. Bitter bottle gourd can contain potentially toxic compounds called cucurbitacins and may cause serious poisoning.

Taste a small piece of the raw bottle gourd before preparing juice. If it has a bitter taste, discard the entire vegetable rather than using it for cooking or juicing. Lauki juice should not be viewed as a substitute for a balanced diet or medical treatment.
