Delhi Police has stepped up security in the New Delhi district ahead of proposed Opposition protests at Jantar Mantar, deploying more than 3,000 personnel to maintain law and order.

The protests are aimed at demanding the resignation of Chief Election Commissioner Gyanesh Kumar over allegations concerning the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of electoral rolls.

The security arrangement includes 27 companies of male personnel and four companies of female personnel. A police company generally consists of around 100 to 115 personnel.

Security has been tightened around several sensitive locations, including Parliament, the Parliament Street roundabout and the Election Commission premises. Police personnel have also been deployed at multiple Metro station gates in the area.

The enhanced security comes amid a series of demonstrations in the capital involving political parties, student groups and civil society organisations.

THREE FIRs FILED OVER PROTESTS

Delhi Police registered three FIRs on Monday after protesters from student organisations, political parties and civil society groups attempted to reach Jantar Mantar to demonstrate against the Chief Election Commissioner.

Two cases were registered at Parliament Street police station and one at Connaught Place police station. Police have invoked Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which deals with disobedience of an order issued by a public servant.

Authorities have also imposed prohibitory orders across the New Delhi district under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS). The order restricts gatherings, processions and demonstrations without prior permission.

The police action follows an October 3 protest at Jantar Mantar, during which three women journalists alleged that they were physically mistreated and sexually harassed by police personnel.

Student activists, political leaders and civil society members have continued to raise demands for Kumar’s resignation, citing allegations linked to the electoral roll revision exercise.

With another round of protests planned at Jantar Mantar, police have reinforced security at key government buildings, public spaces and transport points across central Delhi.
