Veteran actor and politician Mithun Chakraborty has been appointed as an advisor to the West Bengal government and accorded the rank of a Cabinet Minister in the state’s Information & Cultural Affairs Department.
The appointment was notified through an administrative order issued by the Department of Personnel & Administrative Reforms (IAS Cell) on October 6, 2026. The order, issued with the approval of the competent authority and in the name of the Governor of West Bengal, takes effect immediately and will remain in force until further orders.
The government said the appointment was made “in the interest of public service”. Chakraborty’s new role is expected to bring him closer to the state’s cultural and entertainment initiatives, including programmes related to cinema, arts and cultural affairs.
The order was signed and issued by West Bengal Chief Secretary Manoj Kumar Agarwal.
Chakraborty, widely recognised as one of Bengal’s most prominent cultural figures, has had a career spanning Hindi and Bengali cinema. He made his acting debut in Mrinal Sen’s 1976 film Mrigayaa, for which he won the National Film Award for Best Actor.
He went on to establish himself as one of Indian cinema’s most recognisable stars, delivering successful performances across multiple languages and genres. Alongside his film career, Chakraborty has also been active in politics, making the latest appointment a notable link between West Bengal’s political and cultural spheres.
