INDW vs ZIMW, 1st T20I: Niki Prasad and Deepti Sharma Rescue India After Top-Order Collapse
India began the Smriti Mandhana era as full-time T20I captain with a hard-fought four-wicket victory over Zimbabwe in the opening match of the three-game series in Raipur on Friday. Debutant Niki Prasad and experienced all-rounder Deepti Sharma produced a match-winning partnership to help India recover from a dramatic batting collapse and secure a 1-0 series lead.
Chasing a modest target of 115, India were in deep trouble at 22 for 4 after Zimbabwe’s bowlers struck repeatedly during the powerplay. However, Deepti and Niki combined for an 82-run fifth-wicket partnership off 63 deliveries, guiding the hosts to 115 for 6 with 4.2 overs remaining.
Zimbabwe entered the contest after losing all 18 of their T20I matches that year, but their disciplined bowling put them within reach of a memorable upset. Mandhana began her first game as India’s full-time T20I captain with a couple of boundaries before her dismissal triggered a sudden collapse.
Deepti and Niki Turn the Game Around
Nyasha Gwanzura was Zimbabwe’s most effective bowler, using her off-spin to dismiss Mandhana, Anushka Sharma and Shafali Verma. Michelle Mavunga then removed Harmanpreet Kaur, leaving India reeling at 22 for 4 after losing four wickets in just 19 deliveries.
With the pressure mounting, Deepti took the initiative and counterattacked, scoring 49 off 37 balls with eight boundaries. At the other end, Niki displayed composure beyond her experience, rotating the strike and waiting for opportunities to score.
Their partnership shifted the momentum decisively in India’s favour. Although Deepti fell just one run short of her half-century, Niki remained unbeaten on 39 off 35 deliveries and struck the winning boundary in the 16th over.
Gwanzura finished with figures of 3 for 18, while Mavunga also made an important contribution with the wicket of Harmanpreet. However, Zimbabwe could not break through the partnership that ultimately decided the match.
Niki Prasad Makes an Impressive T20I Debut
Niki credited her preparation and composure for helping her handle the pressure of her international debut. She said she understood the responsibility when she walked out to bat and focused on guiding India across the finish line.
“I think I was prepared well. I knew when I had to walk in, I had to just get the game through and that is what I did,” she said.
The young batter explained that she and Deepti concentrated on establishing a partnership before identifying opportunities to attack particular bowlers.
“We were talking about building a partnership. Once we got that partnership, we started to decide which bowler to attack and where to take the risk.”
She added that remaining calm and responding to each delivery on its merit was central to their approach.
Niki also spoke about the playing conditions in Raipur, explaining that heavy dew helped the ball travel faster while the pitch gradually slowed down and offered less bounce.
“Definitely, there was a lot of dew because of which, the ball travelling fast. Also, the wicket started slowing down and it started staying low. But we adapted well. Me and Deepti di adapted well to the conditions,” she said.
Expressing satisfaction with her debut, Niki added that she hoped to continue contributing to India’s success.
“I think I am really happy that I was able to get the game through and build that partnership with Deepti di. It is just the start. I want to keep playing the same way and win many more games for India.”
She also praised Deepti’s attacking approach, saying the senior batter’s willingness to take on the bowlers gave her the confidence to play her own shots.
“She played brilliantly. The way she attacked the bowlers. She was not letting the bowlers get onto her. Looking at that, even I had a lot of confidence to play my shots,” Niki said.
Niki Enters the Record Books
Niki’s unbeaten 39 was the third-highest individual score by an Indian woman on her T20I debut, according to the statistics cited for the match.
Rumeli Dhar holds the record with an unbeaten 66 against England in Derby in 2006. Amanjot Kaur is next with an unbeaten 41 against South Africa in KuGumpo City in 2023. Niki’s 39 not out places her alongside Smriti Mandhana, who scored 39 against Bangladesh in Vadodara in 2013, while Jemimah Rodrigues made 37 against South Africa in Potchefstroom in 2018.
The fifth-wicket partnership between Niki and Deepti also established a new Indian women’s T20I record for the fifth wicket or lower. Their 82-run stand surpassed the previous best of 77, recorded by Mithali Raj and Anuja Patil against Sri Lanka in Ranchi in 2016.
Among full-member teams, their partnership ranks as the second-highest fifth-wicket stand in a women’s T20I after a team had lost four wickets for fewer than 20 runs. New Zealand’s Sophie Devine and Maddy Green hold the record with a 159-run partnership against England in Canterbury in 2026.
Other notable partnerships in this category include Deandra Dottin and Stacy-Ann King’s 72 for the West Indies against South Africa in Durban in 2016, Amy Jones and Heather Knight’s 67 for England against Pakistan in Edgbaston in 2024, and Nat Sciver-Brunt and Danni Wyatt-Hodge’s 64 against Australia in North Sydney in 2017.
Sharne Mayers Leads Zimbabwe to 114 for 5
Earlier, Zimbabwe showed promise with the bat after being asked to set a target. They reached 60 for 1 at the halfway stage, with Kelis Ndhlovu providing stability through a composed 42 off 44 deliveries.
India tightened their grip during the middle overs, restricting Zimbabwe’s scoring rate. However, Sharne Mayers provided a late boost, remaining unbeaten on 43 off 33 balls to take the visitors to 114 for 5.
World No. 1 N Shree Charani delivered an economical spell, finishing with figures of 1 for 14. Nandani Sharma then claimed two wickets in the final over to end with 2 for 11, limiting Zimbabwe to a total that appeared manageable for India.
Zimbabwe’s bowlers subsequently made the most of the opportunity, with Gwanzura’s three-wicket spell and Mavunga’s dismissal of Harmanpreet leaving the Indian batting order under severe pressure.
India Take a 1-0 Lead Despite Zimbabwe’s Fightback
Zimbabwe came close to securing an upset after reducing India to 22 for 4, but Deepti and Niki prevented further damage and completed the chase with authority.
The visitors may reflect on whether a slightly higher total could have made the contest more difficult, particularly after their bowlers had put India on the back foot. Nevertheless, their performance demonstrated their ability to challenge a stronger opponent.
For India, the victory provided Mandhana with a winning start as full-time T20I captain. More importantly, Niki’s composed debut and her decisive partnership with Deepti offered a reminder of the value of temperament under pressure.
India now lead the three-match series 1-0, with the opening encounter providing both a warning about their top-order vulnerabilities and encouragement from the depth of their batting lineup.
