Cristiano Ronaldo Handed 30-Day Ban by Portugal FA Following Training Camp Dispute
Cristiano Ronaldo has reportedly been handed a 30-day suspension by the Portuguese Football Federation (FPF) after being found guilty of leaving the national team camp amid a disagreement over his role in the squad.
The disciplinary council confirmed on Monday that the charge against the 41-year-old forward had been upheld in full. Ronaldo was also fined 255 euros ($285.83) over the incident, which reportedly took place ahead of Portugal’s Nations League fixture against Denmark.
The controversy stemmed from tensions between Ronaldo and coach Jorge Jesus after the veteran striker was reportedly unhappy with his reduced involvement in the team. Ronaldo allegedly accused the coach of going back on his word twice regarding his role, following a match against Norway in which he remained an unused substitute.
Ronaldo subsequently left Portugal’s base in Copenhagen before the Denmark fixture, prompting the federation to initiate disciplinary proceedings. The case was formally opened on October 9 over an incident that reportedly occurred two days earlier.
DISAGREEMENT OVER RONALDO’S ROLE
The dispute reportedly revolved around Ronaldo’s expectations regarding his playing time and responsibilities within the national team. The forward was said to be frustrated after an understanding about his role was allegedly not honoured.
Jesus, however, denied making any such agreement with the Portuguese superstar. Despite the controversy, the coach reportedly remained open to Ronaldo’s return after Portugal secured a 2-1 victory.
The federation’s disciplinary council ruled that Ronaldo had deliberately committed an offence under Article 160(1) of its disciplinary regulations. The decision upheld the charge in its entirety.
However, the ruling did not clearly establish which matches or national team activities would be covered by the 30-day suspension. It also remained unclear whether any period already served under a provisional suspension would count towards the final penalty.
The absence of specific details has left questions over the immediate consequences for Ronaldo’s international availability.
RONALDO EXPRESSES REGRET OVER HIS CONDUCT
Ronaldo subsequently apologised for his behaviour following the Norway match, acknowledging that he had failed to acknowledge the supporters and had left his teammates behind when departing the camp.
The forward also reiterated his commitment to representing Portugal, signalling that he remained willing to return to international duty after addressing the disciplinary matter.
His apology could help ease tensions as Portugal seek to move past the episode and maintain unity within the squad. Ronaldo remains one of the country’s most influential footballers, making his relationship with the coaching staff a significant talking point.
The incident has also reignited debate over how national teams manage senior players, particularly when expectations about playing time clash with a coach’s tactical decisions.
PORTUGAL FA SIGNALS WILLINGNESS TO MOVE FORWARD
Portuguese Football Federation president Pedro Proenca has previously indicated that the organisation would welcome Ronaldo’s return once the dispute had been resolved.
This suggests that the suspension does not necessarily represent a permanent rupture between the forward and the national team. The immediate challenge for the federation and coaching staff will be to settle the matter and keep attention focused on upcoming fixtures.
For Ronaldo, the priority will be to move beyond the controversy and restore his position within the national setup. His apology and stated willingness to continue representing Portugal indicate that he has not abandoned his international ambitions.
Nevertheless, the precise impact of the reported 30-day ban remains uncertain until the federation clarifies how the sanction will be implemented and when the forward will become eligible again.
The episode represents a fresh disciplinary controversy for the experienced striker, whose importance to Portuguese football extends well beyond his performances on the pitch. Whether Ronaldo and Jesus can put their differences aside will be closely watched as Portugal prepares for its next international assignments.
