Ranbir Kapoor’s Ramayana OTT Release: Film to Stream on JioHotstar Through Pay-Per-View Model
Namit Malhotra’s ambitious cinematic project, Ramayana: Rise of a Legend, is set to reach Indian audiences through a pay-per-view option on JioHotstar following its theatrical run. Under this arrangement, viewers will have to purchase access to the film separately instead of watching it as part of their regular streaming subscription.
According to a report by Hindustan Times, JioHotstar and Prime Focus Studios have partnered to bring the film to households across India after its big-screen release.
The film is scheduled for a worldwide theatrical debut on November 5, 2026, coinciding with Diwali. It will also be released in IMAX 3D, with the makers encouraging audiences to experience the epic on the big screen before its digital premiere.
Nita Ambani on Bringing Ramayana to Indian Households
Nita M. Ambani, chairperson of JioStar, said the collaboration would help make the timeless epic accessible to families across the country, including younger viewers discovering the story for the first time.
She highlighted the cultural significance of the Ramayana and the role technology can play in taking India’s storytelling traditions to a wider audience.
According to Ambani, the initiative represents an opportunity to preserve and promote India’s cultural heritage while introducing a new generation to the epic’s enduring values of duty, love, courage and goodness.
The pay-per-view arrangement will allow viewers to purchase the film on JioHotstar after its theatrical window concludes. Unlike a conventional streaming release included in a subscription package, access will require a separate payment through the platform’s on-demand purchase option.
Namit Malhotra Explains the Digital Release Strategy
Producer Namit Malhotra said the team hopes audiences will experience Ramayana in IMAX 3D, while recognising that cinema infrastructure cannot reach everyone who wants to watch the epic on the big screen.
He emphasised that the story belongs to every Indian and that its reach should extend beyond theatres.
Malhotra also pointed to JioHotstar’s established presence in sports and entertainment, describing the platform as a suitable partner for bringing the film into people’s homes after its theatrical run.
The partnership is designed to expand the film’s accessibility while retaining its theatrical experience as the primary viewing option. The separate purchase model will provide audiences with another way to watch the production once it becomes available digitally.
Ramayana: Rise of a Legend — Cast and Crew
Ramayana: Rise of a Legend is planned as a two-part live-action film series directed by Nitesh Tiwari, with Ranbir Kapoor playing a central role in the cinematic adaptation.
Screenwriter Shridhar Raghavan has adapted Valmiki’s epic for the screen. The project is being produced by Prime Focus Studios in collaboration with DNEG, the visual effects studio known for its Academy Award-winning work, and Yash’s Monster Mind Creations.
With its worldwide theatrical release scheduled for November 5, 2026, the production is expected to reach audiences first through cinemas, including IMAX 3D screenings, before moving to digital viewing.
The planned JioHotstar pay-per-view release will offer viewers an additional opportunity to experience the epic at home, although they will need to pay separately for access rather than rely solely on a standard streaming subscription.
