North Korea Tests New Air Defence Missile System, Conducts Strategic Cruise Missile Drill

North Korea has carried out a test of a newly developed air defence missile system and conducted a strategic cruise missile strike exercise, state media reported on Thursday. The latest military activities highlight Pyongyang’s continued efforts to demonstrate and strengthen its weapons capabilities.

The tests took place on Wednesday amid a series of recent weapons demonstrations involving cluster munitions, attack drones, a precision-guided torpedo system and an intermediate-range hypersonic missile.

South Korea’s military reported detecting several missiles launched from North Korea’s Sondok area towards the Sea of Japan on Wednesday.

The latest developments also come at a time of deteriorating relations between North Korea and its neighbours, particularly South Korea and the United States. A dispute involving land mines has further strained inter-Korean ties, while Kim Jong Un’s influential sister indicated this week that Pyongyang has little interest in restarting dialogue with Washington.

According to the official Korean Central News Agency (KCNA), Wednesday’s air defence missile test was conducted to verify the technical capabilities and operational reliability of the newly developed system.

KCNA reported that the exercise demonstrated the missile’s advanced multiple guidance capabilities and the reliability of its target detection and tracking systems. It also tested the performance of the equipment responsible for processing detection data.

North Korea Conducts Long-Range Cruise Missile Strike Drill

Alongside the air defence test, a firepower sub-unit of a long-range strategic cruise missile unit in eastern North Korea conducted a separate strike exercise on Wednesday.

State media said the unit successfully carried out its assigned mission by hitting a simulated airport target using a long-range strategic cruise missile.

KCNA said both exercises were intended to maintain the country’s weapons systems at a high technical standard and improve the operational reliability of its strategic military capabilities.

Unlike ballistic missile launches, North Korean cruise missile tests are not prohibited under United Nations Security Council sanctions.

North Korea has previously conducted missile launches around major US elections, actions widely viewed as demonstrations of military strength. Similar activities were reported during the US midterm elections four years ago and the presidential election two years ago.
