Apple Appoints Amar Subramanya as New AI VP, Replacing John Giannandrea.

Apple on Monday named veteran AI researcher Amar Subramanya as its new vice president of artificial intelligence, succeeding longtime executive John Giannandrea. Subramanya will report to software chief Craig Federighi and oversee Apple Foundation Models, machine learning research, and AI safety and evaluation.

CEO Tim Cook praised Giannandrea’s contributions to Apple’s AI efforts and expressed confidence that Subramanya’s expertise would further strengthen the company’s AI roadmap. Cook also highlighted Federighi’s role in driving initiatives such as delivering a more personalized Siri experience next year.

Who is Amar Subramanya?

Subramanya joins Apple from Microsoft, where he served as corporate vice president of AI. He previously spent 16 years at Google, including leading engineering for the Gemini assistant. Apple cited his experience in translating AI research into products and features as key to advancing the company’s future AI capabilities.

Hailing from Karnataka, Subramanya earned a Bachelor of Engineering in Electrical, Electronics and Communication Engineering from Bangalore University (1997–2001) and a PhD from the University of Washington (2005–2009).

Who is John Giannandrea?

Giannandrea, formerly head of AI and Search at Google, joined Apple in 2018 to strengthen Siri and lead the company’s broader AI strategy. He has overseen teams working on Foundation Models, Search and Knowledge, Machine Learning Research, and AI Infrastructure.
