After months of quiet dignity, Oscar-winning composer AR Rahman has finally addressed the public chatter surrounding his deeply personal life.

In a heartfelt conversation with Nayandeep Rakshit on YouTube, Rahman offered a rare glimpse into the emotional weight of fame, touching upon the media frenzy that followed his separation from wife Saira Banu.

The couple’s decision to part ways, which they publicly acknowledged in November 2024, stunned many and triggered a torrent of speculation online. Yet, true to form, Rahman had remained silent—until now.

“The choice of being in public life is intentional, so everybody gets reviewed. Right from the richest person to even God gets reviewed, so who am I?” Rahman said with calm clarity, reflecting on the relentless gaze that accompanies fame. “As long as we stay together and are not conceited or toxic… even those who criticise us — they’re all family,” he added, choosing grace over grievance.

He also addressed the trolling and invasive commentary with a deeply rooted sense of karma and cultural empathy. “If I say things about someone’s family, someone will say things about mine. And we, as Indians, believe this. Nobody should say unnecessary things because everyone has a sister, a wife, a mother,” Rahman said. “Even when someone says something hurtful, I pray, ‘Please God, forgive them and guide them.’”

Back in November 2024, Rahman had taken to X (formerly Twitter) with a poetic, melancholic announcement:

“We had hoped to reach the grand thirty, but all things, it seems, carry an unseen end. Even the throne of God might tremble at the weight of broken hearts. Yet, in this shattering, we seek meaning, though the pieces may not find their place again. To our friends, thank you for your kindness and for respecting our privacy as we walk through this fragile chapter.”

Saira Banu, through her legal representative, confirmed that emotional stress had led to the separation, though they remain legally married. In March 2025, when Rahman was briefly hospitalised, Saira appealed to the media for restraint and respect, reiterating that the two were navigating this delicate time with mutual compassion.
