Are Weight Loss Drugs Right for You? 5 Key Factors to Consider

Are Weight Loss Drugs Right for You? What You Need to Know Before Considering GLP-1 Medications.

GLP-1 drugs have revolutionized the approach to weight loss. Their mechanisms and benefits are now widely understood. But the real question—and the center of much debate—is: who actually needs them?

Can they work for you? How do they affect your body cells? And critically, are you really overweight enough to require medical intervention?

After speaking with top endocrinologists and obesity specialists in India, here’s what you should consider:

1. Are You Clinically Obese? BMI Isn’t the Whole Story

Why BMI can be misleading
Body Mass Index (BMI) is often used as a quick measure of obesity, but it has limitations. Especially for Indians:

A person with a high BMI may have strong bones or muscle mass.

Someone with a normal BMI may still have a high body fat percentage.

Better measures of fatness include:

Waist-to-Hip Ratio (WHR):

Measure your waist just above the belly button.

Measure your hips at the widest part.

Divide waist by hip to get WHR.

Markers for South Asians:

Men > 0.9

Women > 0.8

Body Fat Percentage:

Clinical standard: Men ≥ 25%, Women ≥ 30%

Methods:

DEXA Scan – most accurate, differentiates bone, muscle, and fat.

Skinfold Test – pinches skin at multiple sites; requires calipers and expertise.

2. Beware of “Skinny Fat”

Some people may have a normal BMI but high belly fat (visceral fat). For example:

A BMI of 26 may look healthy, but body fat could be 38%, concentrated in the abdomen.

Visceral fat surrounds organs and produces toxins that increase insulin resistance—this is what GLP-1 drugs can target effectively.

3. GLP-1 Drugs Are Not Cosmetic

  • India’s weight-loss drug market recently saw the entry of:
  • Mounjaro (launched March): Rs 3,500–Rs 4,375 per vial
  • Wegovy (launched June, pre-filled pen): Rs 17,345–Rs 26,015 monthly
  • Demand is high, and generics are coming. But remember:
  • GLP-1 drugs are medical tools, not shortcuts.

They treat chronic metabolic conditions like obesity and diabetes, especially when diet and exercise alone are insufficient.

4. Before You Start

Consult a specialist and consider:

  • Your type and amount of body fat, not just weight or BMI
  • Lifestyle, dietary habits, and metabolic history
  • Potential benefits and risks based on your health profile

GLP-1 drugs can be life-changing for people with visceral fat, metabolic risk, or clinical obesity, even if they don’t “look” overweight. But they are not magic pills—medical guidance is essential.
