Ila Arun on Arijit Singh’s Retirement: ‘He Could Be the Next Sanjay Leela Bhansali’

Last week, Arijit Singh stunned fans by announcing his retirement as a playback singer, sparking widespread reactions across social media. Many of his peers expressed support, hinting that he may now explore new creative avenues.

Before becoming a Bollywood music powerhouse, Arijit participated in Fame Gurukul in 2005—a chapter Ila Arun fondly recalls. A viral clip shows her scolding a young Arijit for voting out a close friend, with the singer breaking down in tears. Speaking to News18, she said, “I had veto power in Fame Gurukul and saved him from eviction thrice. Even then, I knew he was the most talented. On the day he got eliminated, I said, ‘Arijit hi hai lambi race ka ghoda.’ My blessings are always with him.”

Reacting to his retirement, Ila adds, “I was shocked! He has sung nearly every hit Bollywood song of the past few years. His young fans are heartbroken.” She believes monotony may have played a role: “He’s been singing similar songs for years. He isn’t part of any rat race and is deeply spiritual. Perhaps he felt it was time for a change, and I trust his wisdom—he won’t regret this decision.”

Ila also praises Arijit’s humility and grounding. “He lives in his hometown, works from home, and even runs a restaurant serving meals for Rs 40. Despite his fame, he has stayed connected to his roots. There’s a divine strength in him—call it passion or madness—that sets him apart.”

As for his future, speculation ranges from film direction to politics. Ila confirms, “He’s directing a film featuring Nawazuddin Siddiqui’s daughter. He isn’t driven by money, but I believe he could become the next Sanjay Leela Bhansali.”
