The entertainment industry was taken by surprise on Tuesday after acclaimed singer-composer Arijit Singh announced his retirement from playback singing.
Taking to social media, the multiple award-winning artist said he would no longer be accepting new playback assignments, triggering widespread speculation about his future.
However, fresh reports suggest that Arijit’s decision may not be permanent. According to a source quoted by Hindustan Times, the singer is set to focus on his debut project as a film director, a long-cherished ambition that requires his full attention.
“Arijit is going to be busy with his debut film as a director. He’s been very passionate about it for a long time, and that required his time and effort. With the flood of offers coming his way, he wouldn’t have been able to do it. This is more like a break for a year or so,” the source said.
While the report claims that Arijit’s “retirement” from playback singing is only temporary, the singer himself has not commented on these claims. Earlier, Arijit used his X account to explain the reasoning behind his decision, stressing that it was neither impulsive nor triggered by a single event.
“There isn’t just one reason for this; there are multiple factors, and I have been contemplating this for quite some time. Ultimately, I have mustered the necessary courage,” he wrote. Reflecting on his creative restlessness, Arijit added that he often loses interest quickly, which is why he constantly reworks his songs during live performances. Making a candid admission, he wrote:
“So, here’s the truth: I’ve grown weary. I need to explore different music to thrive.”
He also said the decision was partly driven by a desire to make space for emerging voices in the industry, expressing his eagerness to be inspired by new singers.
Arijit Singh’s most recent playback release is ‘Maatrubhumi’ from Battle of Galwan. While details about his upcoming projects remain under wraps, the singer is expected to continue performing live and focus on independent music, marking what appears to be a new and more personal phase in his artistic journey.
