Usman Khawaja was a late inclusion in Australia’s playing XI for the third Ashes Test on Wednesday, December 17, at the Adelaide Oval, after being left out on the eve of the match.
The opener replaced star batter Steve Smith, who was ruled out due to illness. Smith had been unwell in the lead-up to the Test and was officially withdrawn on match day. Australia captain Pat Cummins confirmed the news after winning the toss and electing to bat first.
“He is feeling unwell and has headed home. But we are lucky to have someone like Uzzie come in,” Cummins said.
Cricket Australia stated that Smith experienced nausea and dizziness, symptoms he has faced intermittently in the past. He was assessed ahead of the Test and advised not to take the field. The board added that Smith is being treated for a potential vestibular issue and is expected to be available for the Boxing Day Test in Melbourne.
Khawaja was inserted at his preferred No. 4 position, with Travis Head and Jake Weatherald opening the innings. He walked out in the tenth over after both openers fell cheaply and combined with Marnus Labuschagne to add 61 runs for the third wicket, helping Australia reach 94/2 at lunch.
