At least 42 people were killed in clashes between ethnic groups in eastern Chad, a government official said Sunday, after violence erupted over access to a water well.

The fighting broke out Saturday in Guereda, located in Wadi Fira. Authorities said the dispute quickly escalated into deadly intercommunal violence.

Several ministers, senior local officials, and the military’s chief of staff were dispatched to the area. Deputy Prime Minister Limane Mahamat said the situation was “under control” in remarks to state media.

Eastern Chad has long faced recurring tensions between farmers and nomadic herders, often driven by competition over land and water. The situation has been further strained by an influx of refugees fleeing conflict in neighboring Sudan.

According to estimates by the International Crisis Group, such disputes over farmland and grazing areas led to more than 1,000 deaths and around 2,000 injuries between 2021 and 2024.
