A fast-track court in West Bengal’s Murshidabad district on Tuesday sentenced 13 people to life imprisonment for the lynching of a man and his son during protests over the Waqf (Amendment) Act in April.
The court in Jangipur also directed the state government to pay compensation of Rs 15 lakh to the victims’ family. The victims, Haragobinda Das (72) and his son Chandan Das (42), were lynched by a mob at their residence in Jafrabad under the Samserganj police station area on April 12.
The court had convicted all 13 accused on Monday.
Murshidabad district witnessed violent protests between April 8 and 12 following the passage of the Waqf (Amendment) Act in Parliament, during which the father and son were killed.
