Bhuvneshwar Kumar Joins India Squad for West Indies T20I Decider in Bengaluru
India’s experienced pacer Bhuvneshwar Kumar has received an unexpected opportunity to return to the national T20I side ahead of schedule. Initially selected for the upcoming T20I series against New Zealand, the 36-year-old has now been added to India’s squad for the fifth and final T20I against the West Indies in Bengaluru on Saturday.
Bhuvneshwar was training at the Centre of Excellence in Bengaluru as part of his preparations for the New Zealand tour when he received the call-up. His inclusion follows an injury concern involving Arshdeep Singh, who sustained a blow to his bowling shoulder during the fourth T20I in Hyderabad on Wednesday.
The senior selection committee has brought Bhuvneshwar into the squad for the series decider at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium. Arshdeep’s availability for the crucial encounter will be determined closer to the match, depending on his recovery.
The West Indies levelled the five-match series 2-2 with a victory in Hyderabad, setting up a decisive final contest. With both teams competing for the series win, India could benefit from Bhuvneshwar’s experience, particularly after bowlers faced challenges containing batters in the high-scoring matches.
Bhuvneshwar’s IPL Performance Boosts Comeback Prospects
Bhuvneshwar’s return to India’s T20I setup comes after an impressive IPL 2026 campaign with Royal Challengers Bengaluru. The right-arm fast bowler claimed 28 wickets in 16 matches at an economy rate of 7.95, playing an important role in RCB’s successful title defence.
Known for his ability to generate swing with the new ball and deliver effective variations during the death overs, Bhuvneshwar has continued to demonstrate his value in the shortest format. His performances in the IPL strengthened his prospects of an international comeback despite his prolonged absence from the national team.
The pacer last played a T20I for India in November 2022. His inclusion in the squad for the New Zealand series had raised expectations of a return to international cricket, but the latest development could provide him with an opportunity to make his comeback sooner.
India will look to draw on his experience as they prepare for the series decider against the West Indies. Following the visitors’ 24-run victory in Hyderabad, Saturday’s encounter will determine the winner of the five-match series.
