As temperatures soar across India, travellers are increasingly turning to quieter, lesser-known hill destinations that promise cooler weather without the chaos of overcrowded hotspots.
Early booking trends suggest a clear shift toward offbeat locations that combine affordability with immersive, crowd-free experiences.
Rikant Pittie, CEO and co-founder of EaseMyTrip, notes that travellers today are prioritising value-driven trips that offer both comfort and calm — a trend driving interest in hidden gems across Himachal Pradesh, Uttarakhand, Kashmir, Assam and Arunachal Pradesh.
1. Shangarh, Himachal Pradesh
Tucked away in the serene Sainj Valley, Shangarh is fast emerging as a peaceful alternative to Himachal’s crowded hill towns. Its vast meadow, framed by dense forests, offers the perfect setting for slow travel. Visitors can explore forest trails, waterfalls, and short treks within the Great Himalayan National Park. Nearby offbeat spots like Shoja and Jibhi make it ideal for a relaxed 3–4 day budget getaway.
2. Tawang, Arunachal Pradesh
Tawang is less about ticking off attractions and more about soaking in raw Himalayan beauty. Highlights include the iconic Tawang Monastery, serene alpine lakes, and the stunning Nuranang Falls, all connected by scenic drives via Sela Pass. Visit between March–May or October–November for the best experience.
3. Yusmarg, Jammu & Kashmir
Just 50 km from Srinagar, Yusmarg offers tranquil meadows, pine forests, and the soothing flow of the Doodh Ganga River. Ideal for slow walks, picnics, and short treks like Nilnag Lake, Yusmarg remains budget-friendly with homestays ranging from ₹800 to ₹1,500. The best time to visit is April–June or September–November.
4. Haflong, Assam
Known as Haflong, Assam’s only hill station is a quiet escape marked by misty hills and the scenic Haflong Lake. Nature walks, boat rides, and visits to nearby tribal villages define the experience. Travellers can reach Haflong via Guwahati, followed by a picturesque 6–8 hour journey. Budget stays range from ₹800 to ₹1,500, making it ideal for low-cost travel.
5. Munsiyari, Uttarakhand
Nestled in the Pithoragarh district, Munsiyari is a hidden Himalayan gem offering stunning views of the Panchachuli Peaks. Popular activities include the Khaliya Top trek, village walks, and stargazing. Though it requires a longer journey via Kathgodam, a 5–6 day trip can be managed within ₹8,000–₹10,000.
