India open their five-match T20I series against West Indies in Lucknow on Tuesday, with the spotlight firmly on how the hosts cope without Jasprit Bumrah.
Bumrah, who was part of India’s successful Asian Games campaign, has been rested for the series. His absence leaves captain Shreyas Iyer with a less experienced pace unit to lead the bowling attack.
The T20I series follows India’s ODI series victory over West Indies, although the visitors finished the contest on a high. Shai Hope’s unbeaten 162 powered West Indies to a record chase in the final ODI in New Chandigarh, giving them momentum heading into the shortest format.
India will draw confidence from their Asian Games success, where they retained the men’s T20 gold. The five-match series also gives the team an opportunity to assess its bench strength and provide international exposure to emerging players.
INDIA’S YOUNG PACERS FACE THE TEST
With Bumrah unavailable, Arshdeep Singh becomes the senior figure in India’s pace attack. Mayank Yadav and Prince Yadav offer exciting options but remain relatively inexperienced at international level. Nitish Kumar Reddy could also provide valuable support with his seam bowling.
Mayank’s comeback will be closely watched after a series of injury problems. His ability to generate express pace gives India an X-factor, while Prince’s rise from being a net bowler to earning an India call-up has been one of the more interesting developments in the squad.
India bowling coach Morne Morkel stressed the importance of giving emerging players opportunities at the highest level.
“It’s great for Indian cricket if we keep on growing that pool, keep on giving guys that experience, the taste of what it is to play in an Indian shirt,” Morkel said ahead of the series.
Morkel also singled out Mayank’s pace and praised Prince’s determination to progress from a net bowler to the international stage.
For India, the bigger challenge will be maintaining discipline in the pressure phases of a T20I. Bumrah’s control at the death has been a major advantage for the team, and his absence gives the younger bowlers an opportunity to take greater responsibility.
BATTING UNIT CARRIES ASIAN GAMES CONFIDENCE
India’s batting line-up enters the series with considerable confidence following its Asian Games triumph.
Abhishek Sharma and Tilak Varma were among the key contributors as India beat Pakistan in the final. Abhishek provided aggression at the top, while Tilak combined power with stability in the middle order.
Ishan Kishan also impressed during the tournament, particularly in the semi-final against Sri Lanka. Sanju Samson, meanwhile, will be looking to make a stronger impact after an inconsistent Asian Games campaign.
The selection battle remains intense, with Abhishek, Kishan and Samson all capable of providing explosive starts. Tilak has strengthened his position in the middle order, while Shivam Dube and the other all-rounders offer additional batting depth.
Captain Iyer will have to balance experience and youth while maintaining India’s attacking approach. Another player attracting attention is 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, who could get an opportunity to make his mark at the international level.
WEST INDIES ARRIVE WITH RENEWED CONFIDENCE
West Indies may have lost the ODI series, but they head into the T20Is with belief after their emphatic finish to the previous contest.
Hope’s unbeaten 162 helped the visitors complete their highest successful ODI chase and provided a timely boost before the switch to T20 cricket.
Amir Jangoo has also joined the squad as cover for Jewel Andrew, who picked up a finger injury during the third ODI. Jangoo’s strong showing in the ODI series gives West Indies another potential option.
The visitors have plenty of firepower. Hetmyer and Rutherford can accelerate in the middle overs, while Romario Shepherd brings both power-hitting and seam bowling. Kamil Pooran has received his maiden T20I call-up after impressing in the Caribbean Premier League.
The bowling attack also offers variety, with spinners Akeal Hosein and Gudakesh Motie complemented by the pace of Shamar Joseph.
That combination could test India’s relatively inexperienced fast bowlers, particularly if the West Indies batters can build momentum in the powerplay.
LUCKNOW CONDITIONS
The Lucknow pitch has traditionally produced relatively low-scoring T20Is. Across six matches at the venue, the average first-innings total is around 141, while teams batting first have won five times.
That record could make the toss significant, with setting a target potentially preferable to chasing under pressure.
Clear conditions are expected on Tuesday, with no major threat of rain and temperatures around 28 degrees Celsius.
