CBI Takes Over Karur Stampede Investigation.

The CBI has assumed control of the investigation into the Karur stampede, which claimed 41 lives and injured over 60 during a political rally of actor-politician Vijay’s Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) on September 27 at Velusamypuram, Tamil Nadu, officials said Sunday.

A special CBI team has already visited the site and re-registered the FIR filed by the state police. The local court has been informed about the takeover.

The Supreme Court handed the case to the CBI following a petition by TVK for an independent probe. The court directed the CBI director to appoint a senior officer to lead the investigation, assisted by other officers, and also established a three-member supervisory committee headed by former judge Ajay Rastogi to oversee the proceedings.

A bench comprising Justices J K Maheshwari and N V Anjaria emphasized the gravity of the incident, noting that the stampede left a lasting impact nationwide. The court highlighted that political statements by top police officials before the media could undermine public trust in the impartiality of the investigation.

“The faith and trust of the general public in the criminal justice system must be restored. Ensuring a completely impartial, independent, and unbiased investigation is essential,” the bench said.
“The incident, which has shaken the national conscience, deserves a fair investigation. There cannot be any doubt that fair investigation is the right of a citizen.”
